What the press have said:"... An assumed eclectic music highlighted by instrumental efficiency and intensity." – Rock&Folk - August 04 "Elzef's style doesn't look like anything known,..., musically rich, full of energy, subversive,... a real find!" – Chorus "Out of the mainstream, ...a joking messy voice and a band to discover on stage!" – Longueurs d'Onde |
Biography Don't panic, don't retune the dial or check your connection this is a new phenomena. Elzef are unclassifiable; think of brass played with the punk energy of the Pogues, the quirky electronica of Matt Herbert and the burlesque of Tom Waits and you're nearly there. Since 2000 Elzef have been picking up the diverse and multi-cultured traditions of their native France and messing with them. Brass band, north African chanson and musette have all been thrown in the musical moulinex with quasi-electronic effects and fright, instrumental sound effects, sketches, what they call "bidouillages". Contemporary styles such as rap haven't escaped either creating a sound that is contemporary and timeless. Elzef have built a strong following based on highly energised live shows, characterised by rapid mood swings and humorous, subversive, surrealist humour. Their April 2004 album reflects perfectly the band's energy, musical quality and the humour. Songs like "L'empire des clés", "Mon étudiante" or "Ce truc-là?" reveal an astonishing musical originality and finely tuned lyrics. Following their UK debut at the Bristol Harbour Festival in 2005, they will be touring in early 2006. |
