Biography Buika’s passionate and exhilarating performances quickly convert audiences to her boundless view of life and music. Since 2006 she has emerged as Spain's leading and most original young interpreter of coplas – Spain’s emotive songs that communicate straight from the heart. Her music is an elated mix of flamenco, jazz, and Cuban soul, as well as her own Afro-Spanish heritage. Buika's throaty vocals cut deep then reach higher, testifying to her unbounded approach to her music and her life. Lauded as revolutionary in her native Spain she has moved beyond flamenco and jazz. Her performances totally enthral. Wrapped in a silk shawl, her bare feet peeking out from a skirt that match her elegant bohemian style, Buika can swing, scat and dance her way through a freestyle Latin jazz improvisation, then sit perfectly still for an intimate and enrapturing a capella flamenco ballad. Comparisons as diverse as Sarah Vaughan and Carmen Linares go some way to express the breadth of her performance. Buika’s passage to the forefront of contemporary Flamenco hardly bares the hallmarks of authenticity or tradition. The daughter of exiles from Equatorial Guinea she grew up on the streets of Palma Mallorca, where she experienced as much Tina Turner as Camaron de la Isla. Her first tentative steps as a blues singer were followed by the showbiz glitz of Las Vegas soul reviews. But it was on her return to Spain where she combined this soulful jazziness with Flamenco under the skilled eye and ear of Javier Limon. Limon’s knack of blending styles found a perfect partner in Buika and their first release ‘Mi Nina Lola’, has sold nearly 100,000 copies. Featuring copla standards, original compositions and intimate jazz backing, 'Mi Niña Lola' has won awards (including best produced album and best song at the 2007 Premios de la Música, the Spanish Grammys) and international acclaim.
